How to Choose Your Wedding Photographer

(Without Regretting It Later)

Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while planning your day. Long after the cake is eaten, the flowers are dried, and your dress is packed away… your photos are what you’ll come back to over and over again.

So let’s talk about how to choose the right photographer — not just the cheapest one, not the first one you find on Instagram — but the one you’ll actually be obsessed with for years to come.

Step One: Fall in Love With the Editing Style First

This is the fastest way to narrow down your options and avoid disappointment later.

Ask yourself:
What style am I naturally drawn to?
  • Light & airy – bright whites, soft pastels, dreamy glow
  • True to color – realistic skin tones and natural colors
  • Dark & moody – rich shadows, dramatic tones
  • Warm & trendy – cozy golden hues and stylized edits

Your photographer’s editing style directly affects how your entire wedding will be remembered. You can’t “change it later.” So choose someone whose work already looks like what you want hanging on your walls.
If you love the way their galleries feel… you’re on the right track.

Before you look at pricing, packages, or availability… look at editing style.

This photographer is a fly on the wall.
Very little posing. Lots of candid moments. Minimal direction.
Perfect if you want everything captured as it naturally unfolds.

Documentary / Photojournalistic

This style focuses on structured, magazine-worthy portraits.
More posing. More direction. More styled moments.
Great if you love dramatic, fashion-forward imagery.

Editorial / Heavily Posed

Step Two: Choose the Shooting Style That Matches Your Vibe

Editing style is only half the story. Shooting style is just as important.
Every photographer approaches weddings differently.

Here are the three most common styles:

Loose Editorial (aka the best of both worlds)

This is my personal favorite and where I land as a photographer.

It’s a seamless blend of:
  • Documenting real, emotional moments as they happen
  • Stepping in when needed to guide you with natural prompts
  • Creating those WOW, romantic, editorial-feeling portraits

You get candid storytelling AND jaw-dropping portraits. No stiff posing. No awkward energy. Just real connection with a polished finish.

Choosing a photographer whose shooting style matches your personality is huge. It’s what makes the experience feel effortless instead of forced.

Step Three: Do the Vibe Check (Yes, It Matters)

I always tell couples: meet your photographer before you book. Phone call. Video chat. Consultation. Something.

Why? Because you’re going to spend 6–10 hours together on one of the most emotional days of your life.

Real talk — you’ll probably spend more time with your photographer than you will with each other on the wedding day (unless you’re getting ready together, which I personally adore).

You need someone who:
  • Makes you feel comfortable
  • Keeps you calm when things get chaotic
  • Hypes you up when nerves hit
  • Knows when to step in and when to disappear

If the conversation feels awkward, forced, or uncomfortable… trust that instinct.
This is your wedding day. You deserve good energy around you.

Step Four: Budget Matters — But It Shouldn’t Be the First Filter

Yes, budget is important. I get it. Weddings are expensive.

But photography shouldn’t be the place you cut corners first.

Your photos are one of the only tangible things you walk away with (besides your spouse… who is also important 😉).

Flowers wilt. Food gets eaten. Decor gets packed away.
Your images last forever.

Think of photography as an investment — not just a vendor expense. If you truly love someone’s work and experience, it’s worth prioritizing.

Step Five:
Ask The Questions
(Good Photographers Expect This)

Do not be afraid to ask questions. A professional photographer will welcome them.

Here’s what you should absolutely ask or look for:

Backup & Safety Systems

  • What happens if their camera fails?
  • Do they shoot with dual memory card slots?
  • How are your files backed up after the wedding?
  • What is their emergency plan if they are unable to attend?

Payment Details

  • What is required to book?
  • When is the final payment due?
  • Are payment plans available?
  • What forms of payment do they accept?

Timeline & Day-Of Experience

  • Do they help with timeline planning?
  • How do they handle delays or unexpected changes?
  • How do they manage family formals and large groups?

Lighting & Technical Questions

Important things to ask:
  • How do they handle low-light receptions?
  • How do they shoot in harsh midday sun?
  • Do they use flash? (Ask to see examples)
  • What happens if it rains? What’s the backup plan?

Full Galleries (Not Just Instagram Highlights)

Ask to see:
  • Full wedding galleries
  • Weddings from your venue (if available)
  • Similar seasons or lighting conditions
This shows consistency and how they handle real wedding day scenarios — not just styled shoots.

Contracts & Protection

  • Do they use a professional contract?
  • Does it protect both the client and the photographer?
  • What are the cancellation and reschedule policies?

Who Is Actually Shooting Your Wedding?

  • Will the photographer you meet be the one showing up?
  • Do they use associate photographers?
  • If there’s a second shooter, how experienced are they?
  • Can you see galleries that include the second photographer’s work?

A professional photographer will answer these confidently and clearly.

If they can’t… that’s your sign.

Final Thoughts: Choose Someone You’ll Trust With Your Memories

At the end of the day, choosing your wedding photographer is about more than pretty photos.

It’s about:
  • Trust
  • Comfort
  • Style alignment
  • Experience
  • And connection

When you choose someone whose work you love, whose personality you vibe with, and whose process feels solid… everything else falls into place.

Your wedding deserves to be documented with intention, care, and a whole lot of heart.

And you deserve photos you’ll never get tired of looking at.
