Why You Should Hire a Wedding Planner (From Your Photographer Who’s Seen It All)

First Things First: Planner vs. Day-Of Coordinator vs. Venue Coordinator

A full wedding planner helps you from the beginning:
Vendor recommendations
Timeline creation
Logistics and layout planning
Design direction
Budget management
Problem solving from day one
They are your right-hand human through the entire process.

If you’re planning your wedding in Kentucky (or anywhere nearby) and debating whether a wedding planner or day-of coordinator is “worth it”… let me lovingly say this:
Yes. A thousand times yes.
And not just because planners make things pretty — but because they make your entire wedding day smoother, calmer, more joyful, and WAY more fun for you and everyone working behind the scenes (hi, that’s me 👋).
After photographing weddings all across Elizabethtown, Louisville, Lexington, and beyond, I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference a great coordinator or planner makes. Let’s talk about why.

This is where a lot of couples get confused — and it’s important.

Wedding Planner

This is the MVP for couples who planned most things themselves.
They step in close to your wedding date to:
  • Take over vendor communication
  • Finalize timelines
  • Manage the flow of the day
  • Handle setup details
  • Run the ceremony timeline
  • Fix problems quietly behind the scenes
They make sure YOU get to be the bride and groom — not the event manager.

Day-Of (or Month-Of) Coordinator

This is the big one.
Venue coordinators are amazing — but their responsibility is the venue, not your entire wedding.
They typically handle:
  • Venue access
  • Layout rules
  • Property policies
  • Venue staff coordination
They usually do not:
  • Manage all your vendors
  • Run your full wedding timeline
  • Handle decor setup
  • Cue your ceremony
  • Track your personal details
  • Troubleshoot vendor issues
This is why I always recommend hiring an independent planner or coordinator, even if your venue includes someone on staff.

Venue Coordinator (Not the Same Thing)

What Happens When There Is No Coordinator?

Let me be honest (with love).

When there’s no planner or coordinator, the responsibility doesn’t disappear… it just gets passed around.
And most of the time it lands on:
  • The photographer
  • Your mom
  • Your bridal party
  • Your best friend
  • Or YOU
Here’s what I see happen most often:
  • People aren’t where they’re supposed to be
  • Hair and makeup runs late
  • Ceremony start time gets delayed
  • Vendors aren’t synced up
  • Important moments get rushed
  • Family photos become chaotic
  • Timeline stress sneaks in
And while I absolutely help guide the flow of the day, my main job is to document your wedding beautifully — not manage every vendor, track every detail, and run logistics solo.
When there’s a coordinator? Everything flows better. Period.

Why Photographers LOVE Working With Wedding Planners

When I see a coordinator on a wedding day, I instantly know it’s about to be a good day.
Here’s why:
They Keep the Timeline On Track
Which means:
  • More time for portraits
  • More breathing room
  • Less rushing
  • Better lighting
  • Happier couples

They Handle the Stress So You Don’t
If something goes wrong (and something always tries to), they fix it quietly — without you ever knowing.
Your job? Soak in your day.

They Coordinate Vendors So We Can Create Magic
When your photographer, videographer, DJ, florist, and coordinator are all aligned — that’s when the REAL magic happens.
It becomes a team effort instead of chaos.

They Protect Your Experience
Your wedding should feel joyful, calm, emotional, and FUN — not stressful or overwhelming.
A good coordinator protects that energy.

How Hiring a Planner Directly Improves Your Photos

Yeshiring a planner actually improves your wedding gallery.
Here’s how:
  • More intentional timeline = better light
  • Less rushing = more natural moments
  • Organized family formals = smoother portraits
  • Calm couple energy = more authentic emotion
  • Well-timed events = better storytelling
When you’re relaxed and present, your photos reflect that.
And that’s what you want to remember forever.

If You’re On The Fence… At Least Hire A Day-Of Coordinator

If a full planner isn’t in your budget — I still HIGHLY recommend a day-of or month-of coordinator.
It’s one of the best investments you can make in your wedding experience.
You deserve to:
  • Enjoy your morning
  • Sip your champagne
  • Laugh with your friends
  • Cry happy tears
  • Dance without worrying about the schedule
Not manage logistics.
